The Fair Haven Arts Center has found ways to continue to support the greater Fair Haven community during this time of “isolation” – from engaging community members in writing and sewing projects to facilitating virtual art shows and community support discussion groups. Our writer’s group, which meets via Zoom, is using this time to put together their 2nd volume of Fair Haven Retrospective – a look back in time to the Fair Haven of yesteryear. FHAC board member, Kelly Jackson, is joined by other community volunteers to sew face masks which the FHAC is distributing to organizations in need both local and downstate. Kelly has also set up a virtual art show for kids in commemoration of Earth Day . FHAC member, Nancy Hale - retired Director of counseling at SUNY Oswego, is facilitating a discussion group via Zoom where community members can help each other face the challenges of the times together.

Welcome to the Fair Haven Arts Center!
Dear Friends -
This time of the pandemic, this time of isolation has affected us each in different ways. To some it is a time of fear, insecurity, grief and even deep depression; others are able to go within and find reservoirs of strength they didn’t know they had; others are reaching out and connecting in ways they never imagined --with people they’ve never met. We’ve seen some become heroes and others fall apart as they see the world they know collapsing. But for each of us it is a time we will likely never forget, a time that has affected us profoundly.
We at the arts center would like to give you an opportunity to express & share with others what you are going through now, what you are feeling about this time, and what your thoughts are on re-imagining life after the pandemic. And so we’ve decided to go forward with an art show, opening on June 27, that we’re calling --- Pandemic. We’re hoping that you can use this time at home as an opportunity to capture your experience whether by a photograph, sculpture, drawing, painting, poem or short story ….You choose the medium.
We plan to have the art show the end of June. If by some chance we are actually open then, we’ll have it as a show at the Arts Center. But our plan now is to do a virtual show – where we post pictures of everyone’s work on-line. To do this you just need to take a picture of your artwork, email it to us and we’ll put it in our virtual show on June 27. The show will run online for 2 weeks for all to see. We will plan to have a “regular” show whenever we do open, at that time you can bring in your actual artwork for display.
We would like this show to be a way for us to come together in this time of isolation and become the kickoff event for our 2020-2021 season. Normally our seasons starts in June and so we thought we would keep the tradition alive by re-imagining what a kickoff event is! We may be staying physically distant for a while but we can find new ways to come together, create and share. Please join us in this endeavor --- details to follow.
We have another Community Support discussion group (aka Golden Years) scheduled for this Thursday at 1:00 pm. We had a great discussion last week on the topic-- "Why does it take a crisis to make us change?" At the start of the session, participants offer up possible topics for discussion and then the group votes on which they'd most like to discuss, So what's on your mind this week? The group has decided to continue to meet on Zoom every Thursday for at least the rest of this month. If you'd like to join this weeks' Zoom session and have not been to one before, please sign up by responding to this email with your contact information and we will send you the Zoom link information.
Our Writer's group next Zoom session will be next week (on May 27 at 6 pm). Again, if you have not been to a previous writer's group session, please let us know and we will send you the link for this. Also, if you are interested in contributing any material to our Fair Haven Retrospective book that the writer's group is putting together, please let us know, You can send your material to us at this gmail (email@example.com) or you can join the next writer's group if you'd like to discuss your topic before submitting,
The Face mask project is still going strong -- if you have any masks you'd like to donate, please contact Kelly Jackson at firstname.lastname@example.org. We have a drop box on the deck of the Arts Center for donations.
Thanks, as always, for your support!
