Play - Harvey - August 15 & 22, 7pm, August 16/23 4pm

Harvey, a Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by Mary Chase, is the story of a perfect gentleman, Elwood P. Dowd, and his best friend, Harvey -- a pooka, who is a six-foot tall, invisible rabbit. When Elwood begins introducing Harvey around town, his embarrassed sister, Veta Louise, and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, determine to commit Elwood to a sanitarium. A mistake is made, however, and Veta is committed rather than Elwood! Eventually, the mistake is realized, and a frantic search begins for Elwood and the invisible pooka, which ends with Elwood appearing, voluntarily, at the sanitarium. In the end, however, Veta realizes that she loves her brother and his invisible his best friend just as they are, and doesn’t want either of them to change.

Where: Fair Haven Art Center, 562 Main St, Fair Haven

Fair Haven Arts Center will be presenting a two part series called “Oh Freedom”, whose purpose is to bring awareness to the community of the multifaceted legacy of Harriet Tubman and of the many people her life’s work inspired both directly and indirectly. We will show how Harriet Tubman’s courage and inspiration went across generations and across the miles to Fair Haven and beyond.,  The Presentations will be open to all with no admission fee thanks to a grant from the Cayuga County Convention & Visitors Bureau..

"Oh Freedom" - Part 1: Inspiration,  August 2nd 7pm
Our first presentation, Inspiration, will discuss what made Harriet such a hero and her courage leading others to freedom.  We will also delve into her less well-known activities such as helping the freed slave become more independent and helping them as they aged, and how she also supported freedom for women.  We will introduce several people in Sterling who supported abolition and the risks taken by some who opened their homes to take in runaway slaves - including William Kirk who hosted Frederick Douglas when he came to speak at the local Baptist church. We will also discuss the importance of music as an inspiration to those seeking freedom.  The presentation will conclude with an audience sing-along.

"Oh Freedom" - Part 2: Steps to Freedom,  August 2nd 7pm
We will introduce pioneering Fair Haven women during the 1800’s & early 1900’s who “stepped out of the box” in support of freedom, such as Belle Kirk, grand-daughter of William Kirk, who wrote extensively about the Kirk family’s involvement with the UGRR, became a social worker, nurse, and even set up an emergency hospital in Oswego to deal with the 1918 influenza pandemic  We will introduce  Eveline Proudfit who came from NYC  to Fair Haven as a young girl, learned to run a farm and in 1856 opened a school for girls to truly educate them.  We will also introduce Virginia McKnight who became one of the first women doctors in the area and went on to become Fair Haven mayor in 1918 and Edna Williams who became a famous photographer and captured much of Fair Haven’s history via her well-known photographs.  We will conclude with how Harriet Tubman’s legacy continues today.

Freedom Bound Series August 4- 27
Fair Haven Arts Center will be presenting a three part series called “Freedom Bound”, focusing on people who had a significant impact on promoting equity and freedom in upstate NY.  This series will include Harriet Tubman, John Brown, Gerrit Smith and individuals who supported the Underground Railroad  in the Fair Haven/Sterling area.   Each of the three parts in the series will run for 2 days (Fri/Sat) .  The Presentations will be open to all with no admission fee thanks to a grant from the Cayuga County Convention & Visitors Bureau..  Events will take place at the Fair Haven Arts Center  barn on weekends from August 4, 2023 through  August 27, 2023.  Follow on sessions for the UGRR will continue through September and culminate in a submission for booklet publication at the end of November 2023.

"Harriet Tubman Freedom Bound" presentation & film  - Friday, Aug 4 at 7pm & Saturday, Aug 5 at 3pm
The first part will focus on the life of Harriet Tubman.  The event will start with a presentation on Harriet Tubman – her life and connection to upstate NY followed by a documentary film on Harriet Tubman,  “They Called Her Moses”.  Presentation will be made by local historian, Robert Kolsters; he will cover aspects of her life and introduce the film and facilitate a discussion after the film.

“John Brown: Hero or Radical Anarchist”  - Friday, Aug 11 at 7pm & Saturday, Aug 12 at 5pm
The second part of the event, “John Brown : Hero or Radical Anarchist” , is a presentation by Robert Kolsters & Dorothy Cooper based on research they have done on John Brown and his relationship to wealthy upstate NY  landowner, Gerrit Smith, and to Fair Haven.  Presentation will include the contributions of Gerrit Smith as a philanthropist/social reformer/abolitionist and how he helped John Brown.  The presentation will be followed by discussion.

“Discovering the Underground Railroad “ - Friday, Aug 25 at 7pm & Saturday, Aug 26 at 5pm
The third part of the event, “Discovering the Underground Railroad”, will focus on the Underground Railroad in the Fair Haven/Sterling area.  This event will be a collaborative effort centered on research done by local historians and extended to include research done by other participants interested in the topic.  The event will start off with a presentation by Sterling Town historian, Susan Parsons, and cover  people in the Sterling area who opened their homes to slaves trying to escape to Canada as well as efforts made by local church(es) to support the anti-slavery cause.  We will also cover the likely tensions the townspeople felt and the risks they faced due to the Fugitive Slave Act. Participants will be encouraged to bring in their own stories and to do research on questions brought up  during the session.  Subsequent sessions will include research done by local residents and writers who have an interest in the topic or perhaps a home that was once used as a URR stop.  Members of the Fair Haven Writer’s Group will put together the information we have gathered from the sessions into a small book/booklet.  Initial copy of the booklet will be printed at the FHAC and then sent out for production.

Local Author & Artist Series
Jim Farfaglia – December 4th   11- 1 pm at the Hardware Cafe (next door to Arts Center)
Jim is a poet & author of several books on local history and traditions. Looks like history was made again recently with the latest snow storm in upstate NY.  Although the Fair Haven area was spared,  our friends to the west were not so lucky!  Seems the perfect time to announce the release of Jim Farfaglia’s latest book, “Historic Snowstorms of Central New York”.  Jim will be joining us at the Hardware Café (next door to the Arts Center) on December 4, with copies of his new book.  We’d like to give you a chance to meet him, hear some of the stories he’s gathered and for you to share with him some of your experiences with snow storms (we’ve all had them!).  After all, living through these storms  is part of what makes us upstate NY’ers special –it builds a kind of hardiness you just don’t find in those from “easy” climates.   Jim will be at the Hardware Café, with signed copies of his new book. We are fortunate to have such a talented, warm and interesting writer in our midst. So please stop by and say hi – and maybe share a story or two.

Postcard Art Sale & Fundraiser - August 7th and 8th
Gallery hours:  Sat & Sun  11-5 pm
The Arts Center is hosting a special event on August 7-8 we're calling "Postcard Salon".  The purpose of the event is to make small affordable art available for purchase - giving people who normally couldn't afford original art a chance to own something "original "and giving local artists a chance to display and sell their work and get some visibility.

We are asking all artists and aspiring artists to consider donating something(s) for this event -- sales will be split 50/50 between artist and Arts Center.  So whether you create something new for the sale or provide print(s) of original work, we would be happy to include your work.   Anything goes -- watercolor, acrylic, oil,  mixed media, as well as prints of original work, photography, calligraphy, writing (e.g. could be an artfully printed saying) -- we'd just like it to be small  as everything will be sold for $10.  Entries don't need to be matted or framed, and, as a guide, they should be approximately 4"X6"  --- but anything close to that size is fine (i.e. it should be in the spirit of "small" - not large paintings!)

Anyway -- it's intended to be a fun event -- and hopefully you'll have fun creating your entries!  The event will be for 2 days - August 7-8.  The second day coincides with Fair Haven's Porchfest -- so there will be lots of people in town.  A good way to get your name out there and to help raise funds for the Arts Center!

If you would like to participate, or if you have any questions, please email us at [email protected].  Drop off of entries will be on August 4 from 4-6 pm.

Tea with Mary & Susan B. - A Play in One Act
Saturday, July 10th at 4pm with tea & discussion to follow

This reading play is a dialogue between Susan B. Anthony and her sister, Mary -- taking place in their living room in 1904.  Many people don't know the important place that Mary had in Susan's life - how she was able to take care of things at home to enable Susan to travel and give speeches.  What would  a conversation between these 2 women have been like?  Did you know that their brothers were also quite active in supporting the abolition of slavery?. Learn some of the details of their lives and that of their family that you  might not have read about.

We are so fortunate to have  a supporting member of our Arts organization, Dorothy Cooper, a woman who was formerly docent of the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester and who has spent years researching the topic.  She and local author  Susan Gately have collaborated to put together this play.

The play will be performed at the Arts Center Barn on Saturday, July 10 at 4 :00pm.  Following the play will be an open  discussion period, where some of our local historians will join us. - and some of our members will be serving  Tea and home baked goods!

So Come with us back to 1904 --- and join us for Tea with Mary & Susan B.

Community Project:  Let's Make Masks, Fair Haven!

CALLING ALL CRAFTERS: If you have some fabric and a sewing machine, please join us in the mask making movement that has started across the country to supply face masks to anyone in need! With a global shortage of face masks available, crafters & sewing professionals across the country have taken to their sewing machines to create fabric face masks for our medical
staff & people in need.

We are setting a goal at the FHAC for our town to make and donate 1,000 masks!   To date the Art Center has donated 300 masks!

Although hand sewn masks are most certainly not medical grade, ANYTHING will help! Some locations have already requested that their nurses and doctors wear the same masks for weeks on end, and have resorted to creating makeshift Personal Protective Equipment from office supplies and bandanas.

Time is of the essence with this project, so please, if you can, grab that scrap material you’ve been saving & start sewing!

Patterns:
Here are some patterns to get you started! There are MANY more on youtube and pinterest! There are NO rules with these, we just need to get masks on people - and fast!

 https://www.masksforheroes.com/make-masks
 https://www.instructables.com/id/AB-Mask-for-a-Nurse-by-a-Nurse/

Need help with a pattern? Let me know! We can set up a virtual zoom meeting to work out any issues you might have!

Also, below is the link to a pattern for crocheted/knit ear-savers! Masks are being worn for long shifts and for days on end, and these ear savers will help to keep anyone wearing a mask more comfortable!

 https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sore-ear-savers

Supplies:

With Earth Day later this month, and most of us being quarantined at home, this is a perfect
time to go through the house and see what could be repurposed into face masks! Some crafters are repurposing old drapes and table clothes (please just make sure you wash all material before you start sewing!). Scrap fabric, old cotton shirts, sheets and bandanas are a great place to start!

If you want to help, but don’t have supplies, please check out JoAnn Fabrics website for information on how to receive supplies at free/low cost to join the movement. They are offering curbside pick up on orders.

Also, let me know if there is anything you need, or would like to donate! We can collect supplies and distribute them to those eager to help without you having to leave your house.

Many patterns call for elastic, but elastic is beginning to become scarce as well as hand made mask production is picking up speed. Ties can be made from ribbon, hair bands, strips of fabric and seams of t-shirts.

Collection
  1. PICK UP

Please contact Kelly via email ([email protected])  or text (315)209-3049) if you need your masks to be picked up for shipping. I can pick them up from porch/sidewalk to ensure safety of participants and minimize people being out and about

  1. DROP OFF

There will be a plastic tote on the Fair Haven Art Center Porch. Please place your masks in a bag and place them inside of the tote. We suggest wearing a mask/gloves when you deliver for the most protection, but plastic tote will be cleaned with clorox after every shipping pick up.

Shipping:
To limit human contact and keep safety as our first priority,(but keeping the time sensitivity of the situation in mind) shipments of masks will be made twice a week. To begin, we will be shipping on Tuesday and Friday mornings! If we begin to receive more than expected donations, we will ship more frequently! Please let me know if you have made a delivery to the art center so I can be sure to get your masks out to those who need them as soon as possible!

The Fair Haven Art Center will be covering all shipping costs, and a few of our generous members will be coordinating drop off to local areas in need! If you are able and would like to help with local drop offs or know of people in need, please let me know!

Where are the masks going?
The masks will be donated to local organizations that we are aware of first. Please, if you know of anywhere that needs masks for their staff, or if you know of a family that needs some - Let us know! Our local communities are our first priority.

Secondly, we will be using the website:
www.masksforheros.com to determine organizations that are accepting hand sewn masks in New York State, and then across the country.

Susan B. Anthony Reading Presented by Dorothy Cooper

the Fair Haven Arts Center

Did you know that February 2020 marks the 200th year anniversary of Susan B. Anthony's birth and 2020 also marks the 100th anniversary of women getting the right to vote?  Quite a year!

But you probably don't know the story behind the passage of the 19th amendment and the role the women of Sterling and upstate NY played in making that happen.  We at the Arts Center are about to bring that to life,  On February 29, we will be presenting a dramatic reading of letters between Susan B and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and others -- brought to us by one of our members, Dorothy Cooper, who previously was docent of the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester.  She has performed this "play" in various locations and we are delighted to be able to offer it here.  If you are interested in participating in the performance, please join us  Thursday, February 6 at 11:00 am at the Arts Center.

Fair Haven Retrospective – 6/28 – 7/14
Opening Reception Friday, June 28th 5-7 p.m.
Fair Haven Retrospective Book signing during reception
Gallery Hours Sat & Sun 11-3 p.m.
Mon thru Friday (July 1 – 5) 12-2 p.m.

The goal of this event is to capture the image of what Fair Haven was like in yesteryear.  There were many good and also difficult aspects of life back then  -- the architecture of the buildings, the characters that lived here, the simplicity of life before cell phones and autos (and yes, no indoor plumbing or refrigeration), the hardiness of the people who were able to thrive in difficult times, the resourcefulness of children who created their own games outside rather than sitting at the computer.  In today's complex world we may do well to remember the simple things that can make life meaningful and bring people together.

And so, while we still have people in our midst that remember the stories and have access to photographs of the past we would like to pull them together into an artist's rendition of "Fair Haven Retrospective".  We would like to make this an annual event with limited material and building on it each year. We would like younger people to be involved - perhaps interviewing some of the older generation and drawing or writing down their stories or even filming them.

So, if you're interested in participating in this event please email us at [email protected]

Artists interest in participating, please contact Susan Lemon 315-427-3428 or email [email protected] by June 24th.

So, if you're interested in participating in this event please email us at [email protected]
